stable at room temp
for 2 hours past collectionMUST fill to fill line Inpatients, ED, Main OR: Collect urine in a sterile, leak-proof container. Alternatively, send specimen with ice collect if tranport delay of >2 hours is expected. Outpatients & Clinics: Collect urine in a gray-top preservative tube if sample will not be recieved within 2 hours of collection.
*Urine sent in a grey-topped preservative tube MUST have at least 3 mLs of specimen in order to maintain the proper preservative-to-urine ratio. Short draws in this tube- resulting in a high preservative-to-urine ratio- can interfere with culture results. If 3 mLs cannot be obtained, the specimen must be sent in a sterile, leak-proof container.
Grey-topped tubes are stable for up to 48 hours after collection (recommended for outpatient and ambulatory sites).
Specimens sent at ROOM TEMPERATURE MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE LAB WITHIN 2 HOURS OF COLLECTION.
Specimens submitted should be delivered to the lab as soon as possible, optimally within 2 hours of collection.
Specimens submitted in a sterile cup after 2 hours from collection must be on ice.
Unacceptable Conditions
Bagged specimens are not sterile and will not be accepted for this culture.
Gray top vacutainer samples filled under the fill line indicated on the tube (<3mL) will be rejected.
Specimens sent in a sterile, leak-proof container NOT on ice received in the lab more than 2 hours after collection will be considered compromised and will be rejected.
Storage/Transport Temperature
Send to the lab immediately. Urine in a sterile cup is acceptable at room temperature up to 2 hours after collection.
