Patient Preparation

Spinal tap performed by physician. Collect fluid in sterile tubes. The tubes should be labeled with a number indicating the sequence in which they were obtained. Tube #1 in a set of three or tube #2 in a set of four is recommended for use in chemistry

Specimen Preparation

Label tubes with a number indicating the sequence in which they were obtained.

Stability (from collection to initiation)

CSF stability:
Analyze immediately or store at 4 °C or -20 °C.

Performed

Daily, 24-hour service, test available as emergency test 24 hours/day

Notes

Prolonged exposure of CSF sample to room temperature may lower glucose results because of glycolysis due to microbial contamination.
