Collect

Acceptable specimen types: BAL, bronchial brush, bronchial biopsy, NP swab, NP aspirate, NP wash, tracheal aspirate

Container: Empty sterile container for wash or aspirate. Place swabs in viral transport medium.

Volume: Aspirate - at least 0.5mL; Wash - 3-4mL

Specimen Preparation

Nasopharyngeal swab: Remove excess secretions or exudate from the anterior nares. Using narrow dacron swab (NOT calcium alginate) on aluminum shaft, gently pass the swab through the nose and into the nasopharynx. Rotate swab on the nasopharyngeal membrane and allow it to remain in place for 10 to 15 seconds to adsorb organisms. Remove the swab carefully and place in 2-3mL viral transport medium and send to the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory immediately.

Nasopharynegeal aspirate: Attach a sterile suction catheter to a Lukens trap and introduce the end of the catheter into the nasopharynx until resistance is encountered. Withdraw the catheter 1-2 cm and apply suction to aspirate a sample. Send to the Clinical Microbiology laboratory immediately. DO NOT send via translogic. Hand deliver.

Nasopharyngeal wash: Tilt patient's head back about 70o and instill 3-4mL of sterile viral transport medium or sterile buffered saline until it occludes the nostril. Reaspirate. Send to the Clinical Microbiology laboratory immediately.

Unacceptable Conditions

Specimen type other than listed.

Calcium alginate, dry, or wood swabs.

Leaking specimen.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Room temperature

Performed

Daily

Remarks

This test is sent to a reference laboratory. Specific specimen type must be indicated on order.

The respiratory viruses that can be isolated by this culture include: adenovirus, influenza A & B, parainfluenza types 1,2,3, and RSV. Other viruses (such as CMV, coronaviruses, rhinoviruses, and human metapneumovirus) will not be routinely detected in this culture. This test has decreased sensitivity for detection of adenovirus.
