Patient Preparation

Inform patient to void urine prior to collection.

Collect

Stool in C&S transport vial and a stool specimen cup.

Collect in clean, dry container and then transfer a minimum of 1-2 gram or 1-2 mL into a C&S stool culture transport medium. Fluid level should reach line on vial.

Also Acceptable for Inpatient only: stool container if received within 1 hour.

Specimen Preparation

If collected in sterile bedpan, specimen must not be contaminated with urine, residual soap, or disinfectant.

Place approximately 1-2 mL or 1-2 g of stool in enteric transport media immediately after collection. The liquid should rise to the red line. Any remaining specimen should be collected in a specimen cup and sent with the  C&S transport vial specimen to the lab.

Fecal specimens for different tests often need different transport containers. Specimens should be portioned out to separate devices of each type for each test requested before sending to the laboratory. Overfilling the vial will reduce recovery of stool pathogens.

C&S transport vial supplies are available online through the client supply order form or by calling the Mattoon Laboratory at 217-258-2225.

Unacceptable Conditions

Common reasons for rejected specimens: unlabeled specimen or name discrepancy between specimen and request label, inappropriate specimen transport conditions (not in a C&S vial or in an overfilled C&S vial)

Additional reasons for rejection: Specimen received in grossly leaking transport container; diapers; dry specimen; specimen submitted in fixative or additive; specimen received in expired transport media or incorrect transport device; specimen received after prolonged delay in transport (usually more than 48 hours); specimen stored or transported frozen; wooden shaft swab in transport device.
