Patient Preparation

No special patient preparation required.
Obtain 24 hour urine collection container from physician office or laboratory.

Collect

Urine: Unpreserved 24 hour urine in a clean, dry container that has been refrigerated during collection.

  • Preferred container: 3 liter 24 hour urine collection container

AND

Blood: Collected within 24 hours of urine collection

  • Preferred container:
    • SST
  • Alternate container
    • Green-top, Lithium heparin
    • Red-top
    • Lavender-top, EDTA
    •  

24 Hour Urine Instructions

Specimen Preparation

URINE:
  • Refer to 24 Hour Urine Instructions in  "Collect" section.
  • Record height and weight of patient on requisition and container when submitting specimen.
  • Note: Non-local clinics submit a minimum 10 mL aliquot of the well mixed 24 hour urine.
BLOOD (Serum or Plasma):
  • Specimens should be centrifuged and separated from cells within 2 hours of collection.
No special handling required.

SJH Lab instructions: Prior to testing urine, all urine specimens must be centrifuged at 4114 RCF x 5 min.
 

Unacceptable Conditions

URINE:
  • Preservative
  • Random
  • Unrefrigerated during collection
BLOOD (Serum or Plasma):
  • Obvious microbial contamination. 

Storage/Transport Temperature

Local clinics: Store refrigerated at 2-8° C and transport to lab as soon as possible.

Non-local clinics: See stability section to determine appropriate transport temperature for aliquoted specimen.
