Fill out stool history form and submit with specimen.

Collect

Fresh stool: Collect at least 2 mL stool in a clean dry container. Stool collection kits are available from lab.
Rectal swabs: Insert swab approx. 2-5cm past anal sphincter. Feces should be visible on the swab. Place swab in C+S Medium to transport.

Specimen Preparation

Fresh stool: Transport unpreserved specimen to lab within 1 hour of collection
Preserve stool: Add stool to fill line of ETM or C+S Medium. Transport as soon as possible.

Unacceptable Conditions

Frozen specimens, leaking containers, dry swabs, or hard formed stool.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Please store at room temperature and transport to lab as soon as possible.

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Unpreserved: 30 minutes at room temperature if liquid. 1 hour at room temperature if soft, formed.
Preserved: 48 hours at room temperature or refrigerated.

Tests included:
  • Fecal leukoctes
  • E. coli Shiga Toxin 1 and 2 by EIA

Hard formed stools are not likely to yield optimal results and may be rejected.
