Collect

One 4.5 mL green top with gel (PST), lithium heparin plasma. Patient should be fasting for at least eight hours prior to collection of specimens.

Patient Preparation

Before administering the Glucola, draw the patients baseline, after the baseline is drawn instruct the patient to drink the 75g Glucola. The patient has 5 minutes to finish the drink in your presence. Once the patient has finished start the timer and draw the patient again at 2hrs.
 
The patient may not have anything to eat or drink during testing except for water.  The patient needs to stay in the outpatient lab during the duration of testing. If the patient vomits up the glucola testing will be stopped and the provider will need to be notified.

Pediatric Collection

Minimum volume: 0.2 mL plasma

Unacceptable Conditions

Sodium fluoride anticoagulant; specimen not properly identified; insufficient sample volume

Storage/Transport Temperature

Internal: Deliver to lab immediately at ambient temperature. Offsite: Centrifuge within 30 minutes of collection. Transport to laboratory at ambient temperature.

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Before centrifugation: Ambient, 1 hour. After centrifugation: Ambient, 24 hours; Refrigerated, 7 days; Frozen, 1 year.

Remarks

Collect two times specimens (fasting and 120 minutes). One 4.5 mL green top with gel (PST), (lithium heparin plasma). Collects separate tube for each timed specimen
