The ME panel may not be optimal for cryptococcal meningitis. Cryptococcal antigen, which includes fungal culture, should be ordered if there is a clinical suspicion for cryptococcal infection.
Aerobic culture and gram stain are automatically reflexed when ME panel is ordered.
Collection Instructions
Meningitis panel is extremely sensitive, which can lead to false positives for organisms that are carried in the respiratory tract of healthy individuals. All personnel in the room should be masked when lumbar punctures are performed.
Collect
CSF from lumbar puncture - tube 3 or 4 or shunt fluid
Storage/Transport Temperature
Transport specimen to laboratory at room temperature

Interpret positive HHV-6 results in association with clinical symptoms and supplemental laboratory testing. An Infectious Disease consultation is recommended.
Specimens positive for CMV, HSV1&2, Varicella zoster will be sent for confirmation/quantitation
