Determining absence or presence of sperm postvasectomy.
Patient Preparation
Patient is required to have a 3 day sexual abstinence prior to specimen collection. An abnormally long abstinence is not recommended.
Collect
Masturbation is the preferred method.
Coitus interruptus is least preferred.
Container must be a clean, dry, wide-mouth container of glass or hard plastic. Container must be free of detergents. After collection of semen specimen, container must be kept tightly sealed and protected from extreme temperature and direct light. Container containing the semen specimen must be labeled with two patient identifiers in addition to the date and time of the semen specimen collection.
Unacceptable Conditions
Specimen is more than 24 hrs old. Specimen Container feels extraordinarily warm or cold.
Storage/Transport Temperature
Specimen must be processed within 24 hrs at Room Temperature (18-24oC) and protected from light.
Stability (from collection to initiation)
Specimen must be processed within 24 hrs at Room Temperature (18-24oC) and protected from light.
Remarks
BayCare does not perform semen analysis. Semen analysis must be performed at outside lab.
