Collection Instructions

Sample collection should be performed in accordance with institutional guidelines for collection of throat swab specimens. Sample should be collected by vigorously swabbing the tonsils and posterior pharynx.

Collect

Throat swab only - Swab samples collected with suitable swab types (e.g. rayon, flocked nylon or polyester)

Specimen Preparation

Submit throat swab in ESwab container (preferred).
Swab submitted in culturette of a non-nutritive transport medium (e.g. Liquid Amies without charcoal; Liquid Stuart) also acceptable

Storage/Transport Temperature

Samples should be held at 2-29oC during transport. Samples may be held at room temp (19-29oC) for up to 24 hours prior to testing or stored refrigerated (2-8oC) for up to 14 days prior to testing.

Unacceptable Conditions

Mini-tip swabs (absorbance capacity less than 60 ul) are NOT acceptable for specimen collection.
Swabs submitted in UTM are NOT acceptable

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Samples may be held at  room temp (19-29oC) for up to 24 hours prior to testing or store refrigerated (2-8oC) for up to 14 days prior to testing.
