If the specimen is drawn and stored in the appropriated container, lead values are stable for 5 weeks at room temperature and refrigerated at 2-8ºC. Upon receipt in the lab, samples will be refrigerated prior to analysis. After analysis, samples are stored at 2-8ºC for 5 days.
Minimum Requirements
0.5 mL Whle Blood
Alternate Specimen Requirements
Lavender Tube (EDTA) (not for confirmation blood lead testing)
Non-certified lead free tubes will have the following comment if results are: > 3.5 µg/dl for ages 0-5 years OR > 5.0 µg/dL for ages > 6 years
The use of non-certified lead-free tubes might produce a falsely elevated result. Repeat testing is recommended prior to initiating chelation therapy or conducting environmental investigations of potential lead sources. Repeat testing should be performed on a venipuncture using a Certified lead-free tube (Tan or Royal Blue top tube).
